…..The winners of the Presidential Essay Contest will be announced in the next issue of the Criterion. I want to thank those individuals who did enter the contest. …..I will also announce the Back School Essay Contest for students in grades 6 – 12. I have done several of these contests over the years. I hope parents, guardians, and other family members will encourage their students to enter this contest. It will be interesting with questions on the upcoming school year.

Also, the month of August is a very important month. It marks the birthday of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey. The Malcolm X and Marcus Garvey Day organizing Committee will hold the 2024 Celebration of Marcus Garvey Day on Saturday, August 17, 2024 from 12 noon to 8 PM at the Martha Mitchell Community Center located at175 Oakmont Avenue in Buffalo. The theme of the program is “Re-Learning Through an African Centered Lens.”

The program will include a March, food, and youth activities. This celebration will be the 137 Anniversary of his birth. The teachings of Marcus Garvey offer solutions to the many problems faced by people of African descent. He believed in love of self, unity of African people, and creating businesses for African people, and the need for organization. I would like to encourage everyone to attend this event. I will repeat this in a future article with more information on the life of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey.
