Nominations Open for 2024 Community Service Awards Honoring Judge Hugh B. Scott

Nominations will be accepted online through April 8, 2024

The Communities of Giving Legacy Initiative (CGLI) is pleased to announce that the nomination process for the Judge Hugh B. Scott Community Service Award and the Inspiring Youth Community Service Award is now open.

Hugh B. Scott was a United States magistrate judge for the Western District of New York, known for his integrity, demonstrated by his work in judicial codes of conduct, and his pioneering work in the area of reentry. He also taught trial technique at UB law school for more than 30 years.

Judge Hugh B. Scott was a founding member of the CGLI who exemplified its mission of creating positive change in the lives of trailblazing youth of color living in Western New York. To honor his legacy, the CGLI established two awards to lift up and celebrate individuals who represent new generations of servant-leaders in our Western New York communities of color. To support the awards in perpetuity, Harter Secrest and Emery LLP established the Hugh B. Scott Legacy Fund at the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo.

  • The Judge Hugh B. Scott – Community Service Award recognizes a person age 21- 40 from a Western New York community of color who exemplifies a commitment to creating positive change in the lives of youth of color through community service, civic engagement or volunteerism outside of their professional position.

  • The Inspiring Youth – Community Service Award recognizes a trailblazing youth age 13 - 20 from a Western New York community of color who exemplifies a commitment to creating positive change through community service, civic engagement or volunteerism, above and beyond activities required or sponsored by school or youth programs.

Nominations for both awards should be submitted online and are due April 8, 2024; the nomination link can be found at www.theCGLI.org.

Recipients will be announced in May and honored at the CGLI’s 2024 Pay It Forward Awards on November 7, 2024.

The 2023 honorees were: Isaac De Los Santos, Vice President, Business Banking Senior Relationship Manager at M&T Bank for the Judge Hugh B. Scott Community Service Award; and Sinclair Maclin, a student at City Honors School, for the Inspiring Youth Community Service Award.
