A LIFELONG COMMITMENT TO REDUCING GUN VIOLENCE

By Eric Perry

Clifford Ryan

In Syracuse, Clifford Ryan stands as a beacon of hope and resilience. At 61, his unwavering commitment to reducing gun violence stems from a personal tragedy: the loss of his 17-year-old son, Driel Lamar Ryan, in 1999. This heartbreaking experience fueled his passion to ensure no other family would endure such pain.

In 2015, Clifford founded OG's Our Generation Against Violence, a non-profit organization focused on grassroots outreach. He takes a "boots on the ground" approach, connecting with young people involved in or at risk of gun violence. His deep understanding of Syracuse's neighborhoods and his respected role as an "OG" (original gangster) help him build trust and credibility among those most vulnerable.

Clifford has intervened in 44 shootings, 320 stabbings, and nearly 2,000 fights, using empathy and a calm demeanor to de-escalate tense situations. He understands the mental health issues and generational trauma that often underlie violence, approaching each encounter with compassion.

His dedication to professional development through training in areas like conflict resolution and mental health first aid equips him to serve as a mentor and advocate for the youth in Syracuse.

Clifford Ryan's story is one of hope and transformation. His work reminds us that compassionate outreach and genuine connection can lead to healing and progress. By joining in his mission, we can help create safer, more compassionate communities where every voice is valued and heard.
