Who Are the Candidates for the Buffalo School Board?
Most people are focused on the election for President of the United States on November 5, 2024. However, there are several local elections that will be on the ballot in November. The candidates for the school board are important also, especially here in Buffalo where we are dealing with so many serious issues that impact the education of our students. The candidates who are running are as follows:
Two incumbents: Larry Scott and Terrance Heard are seeking re-election for the at-large seats. Ann Rivera is not seeking another five-year term.
There are at least four other candidates for the other districts. They are:
Ed Speidel, President of the District Parent Coordinating Council.
Raziya Hill, founder of and executive director of Every Bottom Covered, a nonprofit that provides diapers and other items to low-income families.
Janita Everhart, a street ambassador for 43North, a state-funded funded technology startup competition. She is the sister of Masten District Council woman Zeneta Everhart.
Adrianna Zullich, an attorney who co-chairs the district’s Special Education Parents Advisory Committee. She testified recently at the Common Council’s budget hearing for an increase in the city’s $70 million annual funding for the school district. It takes 400 valid signatures to get on the ballot for the school Board.
It is important to learn more about these candidates and their plans if elected. They have a responsibility to communicate with the public and state their positions on the issues that affect students and parents. I hope that there will be a debate between the candidates so that the public can ask questions. It is also important to know how they have been involved in the community.
Remember, Don’t Forget to Vote on November 5th!!
