The Winners of the Election Day Essay Contest
This Columnist would like to announce the winners of the Election Essay Contest. There were three winners from the Buffalo Public Schools. The students had to write an essay describing the issues in the current campaign for President of the United States. They had to identify the candidates and tell who they would vote for if they had the opportunity. If they could give advice to the candidates, what advice would they give to them?
They also had to name and give information on the first Black woman to run for president. They also had to imagine that if they were president, what would you do to improve the country? The awards program was held at the Merriweather Library on Saturday, October 19, 2024. Two of the winners were not able to attend. However, they received their prizes by mail.
The following are the students who won the contest:
Nyasia Lott, a 12th grader from the Performing Arts Academy. Her prize was $125.00.
Skye Carthon, a 9th grader from Burgard High School. Her prize was $75.
Sincere Vines, a 9th grader from Burgard High School. His prize was $50. Sincere Vines was the only student who attended the award program. He was accompanied by his aunt Monteia Burnett.
I would also like to thank a community member Brother TC for attending the program in support of the youth. Special thanks to Veronica Golden for her help in always encouraging the students at Burgard High School to enter the essay contests. Veronica is a Social Worker and she mentors the students. She also has been a frequent winner of the adult essay contests.
Due to space limitations, I am not able to publish the essays in detail. However, the following are a few excerpts from each essay.
Nyasia Lott wrote that she would do away with project 2025. I would keep all studies based on African American history and gender studies. I would definitely not ban books or curriculum about slavery. I also disagree with mass deportation of immigrants. I would have equal rights for all no matter what their gender or social class is.
Skye Carthon wrote that if I were President I would give homeless people houses. I would make healthcare less expensive. My grandma used to have trouble getting her hearing aid. It’s stupid to have to pay $1,000 to hear. For parents who have children with cancer I would make it less expensive for their treatments. I would also help with mental health. I know there is a need.
Sincere Vines wrote I would improve the quality of education. I lived in Georgia for two years. There seems to be a stronger educational system down south. I would also lower taxes for the middle class. I would enforce more laws on discrimination. I think the candidates need to find an agreement to similar things they want for the United States and have a civilized discussion.
Congratulations to these students for their fine work!!
