The Mighty O’Ba Sports Report: Stephon Diggs Was Who We Was When He Got Here

By Pat Freeman, The Mighty O’Ba

Stefon Diggs

The Stephon Diggs saga has finally ended here in Western New York with his trade to the Houston Texans.

The problem I have is with McDermott/Beane era has continuously attempted quick fixes by pouring money on pure long-term investments. Do most of you realize that the best receiver in the league is who we exchanged for Stephon Diggs and his baggage?

If the Bills would have taken the best receiver on the board instead of the trade for Stephon Diggs, we would have Justin Jefferson on a rookie contract rather than Diggs.

This was the second big time draft blunder by McDermott/Beane when they traded the 12th pick in the draft to Kansas City for Tre Davious White and they selected Patrick Mahomes, and have won three Super Bowls.

There is no question that I believe the Bills problem is in the front office and coaching as to why this franchise has not made a Super Bowl. Bringing in Diggs was the worst of moves because he was on the best behavior until he got a super contract extension with the bulk of the money guaranteed so he could then resume the same antics that got him run out of Minnesota.

Stephon Diggs is a talented player, but McDermott/ Beane fell for the old trick of ‘best behavior until I get what I want, then I become who I am again’ and that is an initiative-taking team killer.

This is the type of player you do not want on your roster, but Houston already has forced him to be on his best behavior or he is out looking for a new contract – over 30 years of age can become difficult.

The McDermott/Beane tenure needs to trust their draft board and stop the quick fixes. You must hit on some players on their rookie deals. The winning teams do this in the new era of the NFL.
