The Mighty O’Ba Sports Report: Buffalo Bills Once Again Have Maneuvered Out of Salary Cap Jail

By Pat Freeman, The Mighty O’Ba

The NFL league year has finally officially arrived, and the hometown team finds itself once again making more strategic moves to stay in salary cap compliance. They have reworked many contracts and had to release some familiar names to achieve compliancy before the league year officially started on March 18.

Most people who have followed the franchise the last seven years realize this is just the first part of the process of building a training camp roster that will be at 90 players before it starts.

The recent signing of Mike Edwards, the former Kansas City Chiefs safety, was one of the most important so far because of the uncertainty of the safety position of the exit of long-time standouts Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde. The Edwards signing once again gives McDermott/Beane the increased flexibility leading up to the draft to pick the best player available on the board.

The position that needs some quality depth before all is said and done is the position of interior defensive line, which saw the largest exodus of one-year contracts on the team this year. The return of Ed Oliver, Daquan Jones must be matched by quality depth, and I would not be surprised if they do not target a player in the first few rounds to fill that void. The whole key for everybody to realize that each year in this version of the NFL you must replace 35-40% of your team each year.

Since McDermott/Beane’s arrival in Western New York, we must trust the process of how this organization builds its football team each year, especially in the later rounds of the draft. I think this organization has excelled at finding players that come in and contribute right away.
