Celebrating a Legacy: Garnett Hicks Wallace’s 107th Birthday!

The Buffalo community is coming together to celebrate the 107th birthday of Garnett Hicks Wallace, a true icon and “Uncrowned Queen” in our midst. The celebration will take place on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at the Terraceview Skilled Nursing Facility.

Born on August 3, 1917, in Ohio, Garnett Wallace has led a life marked by outstanding service and dedication to the community. She moved to Buffalo in 1947 to become the Superintendent of the Buffalo Friendship Home and has since held various impactful roles, including institutional parole officer with New York State, where she became the first female to supervise male parolees in the Buffalo area.

Garnett Wallace is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Gamma Phi Omega Chapter, and The Links, Incorporated, Buffalo Chapter. Her lifelong commitment to these organizations reflects her dedication to service, sisterhood, and social justice. She has been honored with numerous awards, including the Sojourner Truth Award from the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, the Edgar L. Huff Award from the AME Area Missionary Society, and the Dr. M. Joan Cousin Humanitarian Award.

Her community service extends to the Women’s Missionary Society, Bethel AME Church, and the American Cancer Society. Governor Mario Cuomo recognized her contributions by appointing her to the Board of Visitors of the Buffalo Psychiatric Center, where she has served multiple terms.

The celebration of this monumental milestone will not only honor Garnett Wallace’s longevity but also her extraordinary contributions to the Buffalo community and beyond. Local newspapers, radio stations, and TV news channels are invited to cover this significant event and share the story of a woman who continues to inspire through her unwavering dedication and service.
