Mayor Brown Appoints New Chief of Diversity Officer
City of Buffalo Mayor Byron W. Brown announced the appointment of Darren E. Saxon as the new Chief Diversity Officer for the City of Buffalo Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
“Since I took office, diversity in the city’s workforce has increased by 45 percent. People of color now comprise more than 40 percent of the city’s workforce. The city’s government now better reflects the diversity of its residents, as it should,” said Mayor Brown. “I trust Mr. Saxon’s judgment and his experience. I am confident that Mr. Saxon will continue the good work we have done by expanding diversity, equity, and inclusion both within City Hall and throughout our city.”
Saxon has served as the Director for the City’s Office of New Americans. During his tenure he played a key role in expanding the city’s winter emergency communications to residents who speak languages other than English. Prior to his service in city government, he was Associate Director of Adult Workforce at the Buffalo Center for Arts and Technology. Promoting diversity and equity in the City of Buffalo is the focal point of his mission.
"I am humbled and honored to assume the role of Chief Diversity Officer for the city of Buffalo. Together, we will continue the path forged by Mayor Brown toward a more inclusive and equitable city, where diversity is celebrated, and opportunities are accessible to all,” said Saxon. “I am committed to fostering dialogue, driving change, and ensuring that every resident feels valued and represented. Let us unite, embrace our differences, and build a future where everyone can thrive.”
Saxon is replacing former Chief Diversity Officer Chantele Campbell who served in this role since 2022. She is now the Chief Health Equity Officer at BestSelf Behavioral Health.
