Groups Made Historical Pilgrimage

St. Philip’s Episcopal Church members, Pastor Stephen Lane, First Lady Ellyn Lane, and Denise Clarke-Merriweather traveled to Alabama for a pilgrimage on January 16, 2024 with the Episcopal Partnership Diocese of Western NY and Northwestern Pennsylvania.

Three days were spent learning about the events that contributed to the Civil Rights Movement. One of the highlights was being able to walk across the Edmund Pettus Bridge where civil rights marchers were beaten by law enforcement.

A detailed bus tour followed the path of the 54 miles of the march which took 5 days from Selma, Alabama to the state capitol building in Montgomery, Alabama in 1965 with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and approximately 50,000 supporters for the right to vote.
