4th Annual MLK, Jr. Day of Service Focuses On Buffalo’s East Side

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Monarch of Infinite Possibilities LLC (MIP) in partnership with the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor (MSAAHC) and the local NAACP Buffalo Branch will host a local version of the National MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 15th beginning at 8 a.m. Volunteers from all over WNY will gather at the Durham Memorial AME Zion Church at 200 Eagle St., Buffalo. The theme this year is, “Clean and Green,” and the goal is to encourage Churches and Non-profit organizations on the East side of Buffalo to embrace more sustainable practices and use environmentally friendly products.

This is the 4th year that MIP, MSAAHC and other partners have organized the MLK Day of Service on the East side of Buffalo. Last year in 2023 over 150 people from all over WNY donated 280 volunteer hours at 9 MLK Day Project Sites. This year, 25 MLK Day Project Sites will welcome hundreds of community volunteers to participate in 1-2 hour environmentally friendly projects like: cleaning, painting, and beautifying the neighborhood.

In honor of the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., this event intentionally connects a variety of nonprofit organizations, places of worship, and cultural sites with hundreds of volunteers from WNY to build an organic Community, where all people can come together in a spirit of love and harmony to make an impact. When this local event started in 2020, it was exclusively an outdoor clean-up that became an annual event in part due to the Organizer's young nephew, Steven (who was 9 years old at the time).

“In the months leading up to MLK Day (the 2nd year), my nephew Steven asked if we would be participating in another Day of Service because he remembered enjoying himself,” said Faustenia Morrow, Principal at the Monarch of Infinite Possibilities. “With a wonderful committee of volunteer leaders, I am excited to see how this event has grown over the year.”

This year’s event will kick off inside of Buffalo’s Durham Memorial AME Zion Church (200 E Eagle St.) at 8 AM with volunteers heading to their chosen work sites at 9 AM.

The Buffalo MLK Day of Service Committee is now seeking volunteers to work on a variety of projects on January, 15th 2024.
