Fall Activities for Children at Library

By Jewelean Magee

The Frank E. Merriweather Library, located at 1324 Jefferson Avenue, now has programs and fun activities for to get children in the community to come and enjoy the Library.

M. Heather Bermingham, who is the children’s librarian has been at the Merriweather Library since February 2024, came up with lots of activities to motivate reading books, arts and crafts just for kids. Starting with Lego building blocks every Tuesday, kids can come in and construct all sorts of things and what they build will be displayed at the library.

On every Wednesday, kids can come in and do arts and crafts to bring out the creative side and encourage them that there is no right or wrong way to do art and enjoy drawing, painting, and learning other art mediums.

Every first Saturday of each month, there will be special themed arts and crafts activities related to that month. For October 5, 2024 kids can make a monster (non scary), a spider web and other spooktacular fun. November 2, 2024 will be children can create a dinosaur, hatch an egg, and celebrate all things dinosaur.

In December the library staff will ask the kids “who want to build a snowman?” Come in and join the library staff for this and other winterful things to do and much more.

Besides the weekly activities there will also be monthly activities as well such as scavenger hunt as well such as scavenger hunts for kids to find the hidden objects and images (pictures). Survey questions that kids can have fun answering such as what is your favorite dinosaur, would you like to hug a zombie or kiss a goblin, what is your favorite thing to drink? Hot chocolate or apple cider, eat doughnuts or cookies. Come and cast your vote and see all who agrees.

Last is a sensory paths and games to get kids to run or stomp like a dinosaur or hop like a frog, and leap from letter to letter to spell out their names and other words.

These activities are also for children with special needs to come and participate in the activities and the library itself. Plus there is an ongoing book sale full of books for kids and young adults.

So kids, let have fun at the Frank E. Merriweather Library. Hours are Monday, Friday, Saturday 10 a.m. – 6p.m, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, 12noon – 8pm, and Sunday from 12 noon 5 p.m.
