World Premiere of "Unitarian Universalist Church of Buffalo: A Home for All" – A Documentary by Filmmaker Alex Huddleston

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Buffalo (UUCB) is excited to announce the world premiere of "Unitarian Universalist Church of Buffalo: A Home for All," a new four-part documentary series directed by filmmaker Alex Huddleston. The premiere will take place on January 18, 2025, at the church, located at 695 Elmwood Ave, Buffalo, NY. The screening will be held from 5:00 to 6:00 PM, followed by a Q&A session with the filmmaker, during which light refreshments will be served.

This four-part documentary explores the vibrant life of the UUCB congregation, showcasing the church’s ministry, outreach, and community-building programs, with a special focus on its rich history, diverse membership, and impactful social justice initiatives. The series also features an original score composed by Buffalo’s own Zane Merritt, whose music elevates the documentary’s emotional depth and connection to the community’s spirit. The series captures the dynamic work of the church through four unique episodes:

Episode One introduces the church’s general ministry, highlighting its social justice mission, the inclusive nature of its congregation, and its long history of community engagement. The episode also explores the church’s plans for the future, positioning UUCB as a beacon of hope and activism in Buffalo.

Episode Two focuses on the church’s Religious Education program, which serves children from pre-K through teenagers. Through heartwarming stories, lively events, and a deep exploration of UU values, the episode highlights how the program shapes young minds and fosters lifelong friendships, all while empowering the next generation of community leaders.

Episode Three delves into the church’s music ministry, emphasizing its history of musical excellence and the high-level rehearsals and performances of its amateur choir. This episode celebrates how music plays a pivotal role in the church’s worship services and its ability to bring people together through the arts.

Episode Four concludes the series with a focus on the church’s food ministry, which provides a free meal every week after service to members of the congregation and anyone off the street. The episode reveals the dedication, creativity, and teamwork required to keep this essential program running, offering viewers a glimpse into the lives of those who volunteer their time and energy to nourish both the bodies and spirits of those who join in the meal.

"We wanted to showcase the incredible work that UUCB does in Buffalo, from its social justice initiatives to its music and food ministries," said Alex Huddleston, the filmmaker behind the project. "Each episode offers a different lens into the church, capturing the dedication and spirit of the people who make it such a special place. I’m thrilled to share this story with the community, especially with Zane Merritt’s moving score bringing everything together."

The premiere event is free and open to the public, offering an opportunity for the community to come together, engage with the filmmakers, and reflect on the powerful stories of faith, service, and community.
