The Real Lawyers of Atlanta
The latest Donald Trump sideshow is playing out like a TV reality episode that could be called ‘The Real Lawyers of Atlanta.’ In one of the biggest political scandals in American jurisprudence where a former President and 18 others are charged with crimes stemming from their efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia, the historic high profile case was brought in Fulton County, GA. (Atlanta), where lead District Attorney Fani Willis and Attorney Nathan Wade (who was hired as a special prosecutor to lead the prosecution of Trump, were discovered to have had a romantic affair. It all came to light when Wade’s law partner snitched about the affair to the Trump defense lawyer because he was mad about being fired by Wade for an alleged sexual assault on a client.
The Trump’s defense team filed a motion to have D.A. Willis removed from the case on the grounds Willis benefitted financially from her relationship with Wade, who paid upfront for personal Caribbean vacations and various junkets together. Both testified she reimbursed him for the trips in cash.
D.A. Willis defiantly took the stand to defend her position on the charges of there being any impropriety.
I struggle with what to say about this situation. It reminds me of an old comedy routine by the comedian named Sommore. In that routine, she talks about how there was an effort by people to persuade Black comedians from saying the N-word. She had a problem with that because there are certain situations that can only be described as “Nig. sh.t.” That’s exactly the way I feel about this case from start to finish. It’s nig. sh.t
D.A Fani and Mr. Wade testified their relationship started in 2022. Willis testified defiantly the relationship didn’t begin until 2022 and Mr. Wade testified he has never visited her Atlanta residence ever. Both testified Mr. Wade never visited her at her home prior to 2022. They even called in Ms. Willis’ distinguished father to testify he never saw Mr. Wade at the residence prior to 2020.
I was believing them, yet I understood the optics were problematic; but I did not think they were being nefarious until, in a bombshell revelation in the latest testimony by a private investigator for Trump’s team, who has produced subpoenaed cell phone records of Mr. Wade and DA Willis prior to 2022. The tracking evidence revealed Mr. Wade has been to Ms. Willis’ residence at least 36 times, and made hundreds of voice calls and text messages. They were even able to track Mr. Wade, who made what can only be described as late-night booty calls at Ms. Willis’ residence prior to 2022.
No mistake about it, DA Willis and Wade have been cold busted, and the judge is sure to throw the case out and transfer the case to a nearby jurisdiction where it’s not likely to be heard before the election. A win for Trump. One doesn’t have to be Perry Mason to know that DA Willis and Wade are in big trouble and their entire careers lie in question. Committing perjury under oath on national television is unquestionably a disbarrable offense. Someone could go to jail as well.
I find it incredible how some of the smartest people can be the dimmest. They should have known they could not get away with an affair in such a high-profile case. She should have withdrawn from the case the moment she realized they had been outed. But that’s how “Nig. sh.t”goes.
