A New Essay Contest for Students In Grades 4 - 12
In celebration of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. this columnist would like to introduce my first essay contest of 2025 for students in grades 4 – 12. I am inviting students to imagine that they could plan a birthday party for Dr. King. I am introducing this essay contest now to give participants enough time to think about entering it. The time is going by very quickly. The deadline to enter the contest will be Saturday, January 25, 2025. This contest will encourage our students to reflect on the history of Dr. King and at the same time express their creativity, use their imagination, and enhance their writing skills. The following are the rules of the contest.
The essay must include at least two paragraphs at the beginning of the essay on the life of Dr. King. Tell why his work was so important to our country and to African Americans. Students must also state the age that Dr. King would be today if he had lived. What was his original birthday?
Students must identify where they would have a party for Dr. King and who they would invite.
What food would you serve and what decorations would you include in the party? If you have music, what music would you include?
The essay must be at least two pages in length. It must be typed neatly. Handwritten essays will not be accepted!!
Students must put their name, address, phone number and grade on the essay. Please identify the name of your school.
All essays can be emailed to me at ewriter52@roadrunner.com by midnight of January 25 th or dropped off at the Merriweather Library located at 1324 Jefferson Avenue. For more information you can call (716) 847-6010 or send an email message to the address above.
