Zeal Talk Report with JGILLZ: 3 Bright Spots After An Up and Down Bills Season

Written by Jalen McGill

QB Josh Allen and QB Patrick Mahomes

The Buffalo Bills saw their season come to an end after a tough loss in the Divisional Round of the NFL Playoffs to the Kansas City Chiefs. The team suffered their 3rd divisional round loss in a row, and third playoff loss to the Patrick Mahomes led Chiefs.

This season brought a lot of highs and a lot of lows for Bills Mafia. What’s undeniable is the level of adversity this team was able to overcome. Injuries, major coaching decisions, and scandal all played their role this season for the team, but the Bills stood tall as AFC East Champions for the fourth straight season under Josh Allen and Sean McDermott.

This offseason, Brandon Bean will have to work his magic to try and overturn this cap strapped and aged roster. With money issues and aged players looming, it’s no secret this version of the Buffalo Bills will cease to exist next season. That’s not to say there aren’t some major building blocks for this team moving forward. I’ve identified 3 bright spots for the Bills as they move into next season.

Bright Spot Number One: Joe Brady

The Bills were sitting at 6-6 and in 11th place before Offensive Coordinator Joe Brady took over play calling. Brady unlocked the young talent on this roster and improved the team’s points per game, rushing yards per game, and efficiency. His experience with great quarterbacks were evident as he was able to put Josh Allen in great positions the second half of this season.

Bright Spot Number Two: Young Offensive Nucleus

The Bills young guys played amazing this year. Kahlil Shakir, O’Cyrus Torrence, Dalton Kincaid and James Cook. The player who received the most from the mid-season coordinator change was by far James Cook. Cook started the season on a back-by-committee approach, which often left him with minimal attempts and opportunities with the ball in his hands. All that changed once Brady displayed him as the primer running back.

Cook showed what he could do in a monstrous game against the Cowboys that saw him rush for 179 yards on 25 attempts and a touchdown. A lot of what helped Cook’s success is the success of the offensive line.

O’Cyrus Torrence was a huge part of that. O’Cyrus was able to start alongside his offensive linemen the whole season. He had ups and downs, but gained an extremely large amount of experience. He anchored his right guard spot and will continue to hold that spot for years to come. Pass catchers like Shakir and Kincaid also showed great mise as key role players for the offense.

Bright Spot Number Three: Quarterback Josh Allen

Josh Allen is becoming one of the most polarizing figures in the National Football League. You either love him, or criticize him, and they’ll think you hate him. One thing is undeniable, and that’s his talent.

Josh Allen is 63-31 since becoming a Buffalo Bill. His team is an instant super Bowl favorite every year he laces up his cleats. He’s never missed a game, and always gives it 100%. He’s the only quarterback in NFL history to lead the NFL with 40 or more TD’s in 4 straight seasons. He is Buffalo, and without him the bills have no chance of winning a Super Bowl.
