“Creator of the Week”: KOBE BARBER
By Eric Perry
I had the pleasure of sitting down with local artist Kobe Barber to discuss his impressive body of work and artistic process. Kobe, a native of Buffalo, New York, has been creating art since he was a child, developing a unique style that blends realism, surrealism, and cubism. Kobe's artwork features a wide range of subjects, from captivating animal portraits to powerful depictions of Black cultural icons and experiences. "I try to limit myself to three different boxes; fantasy, real life, and animals, Kobe explains, "because if I don't, I'll just spin out of control and end up painting everything all at once."
This strategic approach has allowed Kobe to showcase his versatility while also catering to the preferences of various galleries in the area. Currently, his work can be found at the Princess Gallery in Buffalo, where he is preparing for an upcoming group exhibition featuring a reimagined take on Renaissance paintings, this time with black and brown subjects.
When asked about his creative process, Kobe emphasizes the importance of experimentation and learning from other artists. "Explore what you want to explore," he advises young aspiring artists. "Experiment, see what works for you, and then worry about the rest later on. Don't pigeonhole yourself into just going a certain way."
Kobe's own artistic journey has been shaped by his willingness to try new techniques and draw inspiration from diverse sources, including social media trends and personal connections with models. By working via themed series, he has been able to hone his skills in different areas, constantly pushing the boundaries of his craft.
As a respected artist within the Buffalo community, Kobe's insights and guidance are invaluable for the next generation of creators. His dedication to his craft and his unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of artistic expression, serve as an inspiration to all who seek to follow in his footsteps.
