First Elected Black Woman Elected in Village of Kenmore Board of Trustees

On November 5, 2024, Brittany Jones became the first person of color to be elected to the Village of Kenmore Board of Trustees. Although Jones became the first Black woman to serve as a trustee in the Village’s 125-year history when she was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Village Board, her recent election win is significant in its own right and brings about needed change. Across Erie County’s suburbs, people of color have rarely been elected to town or village offices. Her election win is significant in that she garnered more support than her running mate, Donna Genesky. According to the Erie County Board of Elections, Jones secured 51% of the vote to Genesky’s 47.6%. Both women will serve on the Village Board, but Jones now illustrated what can be done to secure representation for residents of color in all parts of Erie County.
