Buffalo, NY…Last year more than 50,000 Americans died by their own hand because of the strain of mental illness. The U.S. Surgeon General has called mental health the “defining health crisis of our time.” Often, these individuals have interacted with the mental health system, finding it unsupportive, clinical and demeaning in its approach to crisis intervention.

Recovery Options Made Easy, a peer-run non-profit, supports individuals where they are in their recovery from a place of lived-experience. Recovery Options’ supportive housing, respite and recovery centers and community-based peer services help individuals build independence through genuine acceptance, peer support and guidance and mutual respect.

Recovery Options’ Kirsten Vincent Respite & Recovery Center, located in the Fruit Belt adjacent to the Medical Campus, provides a place where those in recovery can stay when a crisis arises. Guests come and go and continue their lives receiving peer support and linkages to services while practicing independence and maintaining their lives in the community.

At the Kirsten Vincent Respite & Recovery Center art is embraced as part of the recovery support structure. The art collection represents 62 original works of art by 36 Erie County artists including works from Buffalo Public Schools students, Starlight Studios, and Locust Street Art, as well as works by renowned professional artists. The collection was curated to provide warm and welcoming spaces in the crisis residences and common areas of the Kirsten Vincent Respite and Recovery Center for guests and visitors to enjoy, be inspired by, and find hope and healing in. The Kirsten Vincent Respite & Recovery Center Art Collection was made possible through a generous donation from the Orr Family in memory of Jennifer Orr.

The collection is dedicated to the memory of Jennifer Orr (1989-2022), who tragically passed away in 2022 after taking her own life. Jennifer was a community advocate, deeply involved with Buffalo's comedy, music, and arts scenes, and volunteered with several local non-profits. While Jennifer had many interests, her greatest passion was to help others. This curation serves as one of the countless ways Jennifer's memory and love for helping others lives on.

The Kirsten Vincent Respite & Recovery Center Art Collection is more than just an art exhibit. It is a celebration of resilience, hope, and the power of creativity to heal.
