Empowering the Future: Eta Rho Sigma Chapter’s Youth Symposium
In the heart of our community, the Eta Rho Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. has once again made strides in the Buffalo/Niagara region through its recent Youth Symposium on March 8, 2025. The “Turning Your Passion Into Profit” event focused on fostering entrepreneurial skills among our youth. Founded in 1922 by seven visionary educators, this premier African-American sorority has dedicated nearly a century to uplifting women and their families through scholarship, service, and sisterhood.
Lyndian Royes, the president of the Eta Rho Sigma Chapter and a Teach for America alumna, led this year’s event. “This symposium was vital for our community,” she reflected after its conclusion. “It allowed us to connect with our youth and show them that they can achieve anything they set their hearts on.” Additionally, the symposium provided a platform for local business owners to share their inspiring stories and invaluable expertise. Young people from ages 12 to 18, whether budding entrepreneurs or simply curious about starting a business, were warmly invited to attend.
Royes emphasized, “Whatever your passion is, you can pursue it and find success. We aimed to provide a space where they could express themselves and showcase their talents.” This belief in empowerment was echoed by her fellow co-chairs, Soror Jaquann Bradberry and Tristan Jordan, who were equally passionate about the mission of the symposium.
Bradberry stated, “This event was a chance for us to connect with our youth and demonstrate that they can achieve their dreams. It was about showing them that they have the support and resources to make it happen.” She firmly believes in the power of visibility and representation, especially for young people who may not see themselves in entrepreneurial roles.
Jordan added, “The symposium shone a light on various issues like entrepreneurship and creativity, particularly for underprivileged children who may lack access to such opportunities. We wanted to inspire them to think big and reach for their goals.” Her commitment to empowering youth was evident in her enthusiasm for the event.
In the past, the Eta Rho Sigma chapter has tackled a range of topics, from mental health to physical wellness, ensuring that each symposium resonates with the community's needs. “Every year, we aim to come back stronger and offer something fresh that motivates the kids,” Jordan shared.
Royes also emphasized the importance of mentorship for young entrepreneurs. “Having control over your income and financial future is crucial,” she reflected. “Finding a mentor, someone who has successfully navigated this journey, is one of the most significant steps a young person can take.”
With dedicated volunteers like Bradberry and Jordan by her side, Royes is committed to making a lasting difference in the lives of local youth. By empowering the next generation of leaders, they are investing in a brighter future for our community.
