DiNapoli: Do You Have Lost Money?

$1.5 Million Returned to New Yorkers Every Day

The Office of New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli (OSC) encourages New Yorkers to check and see if they have unclaimed funds. OSC currently safeguards 51 million unclaimed funds accounts valued at over $19 billion. The lost money belonging to New Yorkers can come from utility deposits, trust funds, old bank accounts, uncashed checks, investment accounts and insurance claims and other inactive accounts that have remained dormant for years.

“My office makes every effort to connect New Yorkers with their lost money,” said New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. “By joining and holding events across the state we can help individuals, companies, nonprofits and municipalities check for unclaimed funds and get their money back to them quickly and easily.”

Every day the Comptroller’s office returns over $1.5 million and can track and uncover lost financial assets dating as far back as the 1940s. To assist individuals in claiming their lost funds, staff members from OSC attend community events across the state to provide information and assistance with the search process.

Residents who cannot make it to an in-person event can search for and claim their money by using the online claiming system or by calling 1-800-221-9311.

A map of unclaimed funds owed to New Yorkers by county and region is available here, and you can learn more about unclaimed funds by visiting: osc.ny.gov/unclaimed-funds.
