Business of the Week: “Angel Lee Angels”
By Eric Perry
Lisa Brown, also known as Angel Lee is a woman deeply rooted in art, culture, and her hometown of Buffalo, New York. With her unique spin on fedoras, incredible artwork, and a show at the Apollo along with her nonprofit organization the Angel Lee Legacy Foundation, Angel is truly an inspiring individual to speak with.
It all started with her need to create art. As she explored this passion, she noticed that many children in her community had stopped reading. This realization led her to write her first books, Little Brown Girl and Little Brown Girl Lost at The Market which focus on her experiences growing up in the city of Buffalo.
After gaining experience in event planning and helping others set up art shows, Ms. Brown had the idea to create her own art. Her first art show was a success and she knew she had found something special. Her unique style of not putting faces on her artwork allows people to see themselves in the art and her use of vibrant colors, unique shapes, and textures makes her work stand out. Additionally, she takes pride in making her art affordable so that anyone can have artwork in their homes.
Currently, Mrs. Brown's focus is on her nonprofit organization, "Angel Lee Angels" where she aims to create wellness book nooks in community centers, shelters, and nursing homes. Her goal is to bring the joy of reading back to the community believing that it can open doors and uplift minds.
During our conversation, we discussed the significance of having a reliable team to support your business and the importance of surrounding yourself with people who share your vision and goals. Ms. Brown also highlighted the value of giving back to the community, particularly through nonprofit ventures. She emphasized that while it is essential to grow your business and seek funding, it's equally important to show the community that you are invested in giving back.
We touched upon the importance of parents paying attention to their children's dreams and how investing time and supporting them can be more impactful than monetary investments. Ms. Brown's insights shed light on the world of nonprofits, branding, and the steps one can take to expand their brand.
