Buffalo Public School District History Day Competition Held

Turning Point in History

The Buffalo Public School District History Day Competition was held Friday, February 16th, at the Buffalo History Museum, 1 Museum Court, Buffalo. Over 150 students, grades 6-12, participated.

Buffalo Public Schools History Day, a year-long educational program sponsored by the Buffalo Public Schools Department of Social Studies in conjunction with the Buffalo History Museum, encourages students to explore local, state, national, and world history. After selecting a historical topic that relates to this year’s theme of “Turning Point in History”, students conducted extensive research by using libraries, archives, museums, and oral history interviews.

Students analyzed and interpreted their findings, to draw conclusions about their topics’ historical significance, and created final projects that present their work. There are five project categories: historical paper, exhibit, performance, website, and documentary. Students compete in the junior division for grades 6-8 or the senior division for grades 9-12. These projects can be entered into local, regional, state, and national competitions, where they are evaluated by historians and educators.

Director W. Charles Brandy said: “Engaging in History Day helps to develop future generation of historians, researchers, scholars, and civic-minded leaders.”

National History Day is a College Park, Maryland-based nonprofit that runs an annual project-based contest for students in grades 6-12. Now in its 50th year, the organization has affiliates in all 50 states and Washington, D.C
