Are You REAL ID Ready? What You Need to Know with the Approaching Deadline

If you frequently fly, it’s time to prepare for your next adventure. The deadline to meet the REAL ID compliance standard is fast approaching, and starting May 7, 2025, it will be mandatory for domestic air travel. The Erie County Clerk’s Office wants you to be ready, so here’s what you need to know.

What is REAL ID?

REAL ID is a federal requirement for state-issued driver licenses and non-driver identifications, designed to help prevent fraudulent identification. It is important to note that there is no additional fee for a REAL ID; you’ll only need to pay the standard fees associated with your transaction.

How Can You Tell If You Have a REAL ID?

A REAL ID-compliant card will have a marking on it, which could either be a black star or a United States flag. These markings will appear on the upper or lower part of the card. If your ID lacks this marking, it is not REAL ID-compliant and will not be accepted as valid identification for boarding commercial aircraft. Instead, a non-REAL ID-compliant card will display the words “NOT FOR REAL ID PURPOSES.”

When Will REAL ID Be Required for Air Travel?

In New York, a REAL ID will be required starting May 7, 2025. While this requirement applies to domestic flights, it will not impact your ability to drive. You can still use a standard New York driver’s license for driving purposes or as a government-issued form of identification.

Do You Need a REAL ID to Fly Domestically?

Besides a REAL ID, other acceptable forms of identification for domestic air travel include an Enhanced Driver’s License or non-driver ID, a U.S. passport book or card, or a federally approved ID like a NEXUS card.

Is a REAL ID Mandatory?

No, obtaining a REAL ID is not mandatory. A REAL ID is optional, and you do not need one for various activities such as being licensed to drive, voting or registering to vote, applying for or receiving federal benefits, accessing health or life insurance, participating in law enforcement activities, or entering federal facilities that do not require identification.

Will You Need a REAL ID for Any Other Reasons?

Yes, a REAL ID is required to access federal facilities such as U.S. military bases and nuclear power plants. If you plan to visit these locations, having a REAL ID will be essential.

Does an Enhanced ID Meet the REAL ID Standard?

Yes, an Enhanced Driver License (EDL) meets the REAL ID compliance standard. The EDL has been available to New York residents since 2008. It includes a banner that reads “Enhanced” and features an American flag in the top right corner (older versions of the EDL have the flag in the bottom right corner).

An EDL can be used for domestic flights and to enter federal buildings and military bases. Additionally, it is accepted at U.S. land and sea borders when traveling to and from Canada, Mexico, and some Caribbean countries. However, a passport is still required for all international flights.

Like the REAL ID, you must go to an Erie County Auto Bureau in person to get an Enhanced Driver’s License. You will need to provide documentation proving your U.S. citizenship, identity, and residency. An EDL costs an additional $30, in addition to the normal transaction fees.

What Documents Do You Need for a REAL ID or Enhanced ID?

To obtain either a REAL ID or Enhanced ID, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (NYS DMV) requires several original documents. These include proof of identity, such as a valid license, birth certificate, or U.S. passport; proof of your Social Security Number (or a letter confirming ineligibility); proof of your date of birth, such as a certified copy of your birth certificate; and proof of U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residency, or temporary lawful status in the U.S.

Additionally, you’ll need two different proofs of New York State residency, like a utility bill or a bank statement. If your name has changed, you’ll need to provide court- or government-issued documents that verify the change, such as a marriage license or court order. It is important to remember that only original or certified copies of these documents are accepted—photocopies or screenshots will not be allowed.

Where Can You Obtain a REAL ID or Enhanced ID?

Both the REAL ID and Enhanced ID must be obtained in person at the Erie County Auto Bureau (NYS DMV). Due to the expected higher-than-usual volume at DMV branches, it’s highly recommended to make an appointment ahead of time.
