Intended Audience: Open Event
The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures and the Department of Africana and American Studies cordially invites you to the African-American Cultural Center on Friday, February 28th for a presentation by award-winning music, culture and travel writer, copywriter, filmmaker and production designer Sharine Taylor! Dinner and social activities to follow. The event seeks to uncover and celebrate the deeper historical and cultural significance of Carnival within the African diaspora. While often associated with vibrant street parades and joyous dances, Carnival holds a much richer narrative. This event will explore its origins as a space for resistance, community expression, and cultural survival during slavery and beyond. Through this conversation, we aim to honor the resilience and creativity of those who used Carnival to reclaim their humanity, voice their aspirations, and mock oppressive systems.
