A New Buffalo Story About Learning Basketball and Life

Dr. Anwar Yusef Dunbar

I want to start off by thanking Bruce Merriweather II and The Buffalo Criterion for allowing me to publish some of my essays on their platforms. The Buffalo Criterion is an integral part of the Buffalo community, and it was an important part of my youth growing up in Buffalo. This is my third offering for the Buffalo Criterion and it is more of an announcement than an essay. My whole purpose for becoming a blogger/writer was an idea for a book project I had several years ago. I’m pleased to announce that I have recently published part one of that idea. It is my book project entitled, The Engineers: A Western New York Basketball Story Part One: Innocent Basketball Dreams.

The Engineers: A Western New York Basketball Story Part One is a creative non-fiction story about what sports teach you as a young person about life, success and failure and how those lessons translate into the adult world. It follows my basketball journey at the former Campus West/College Learning Laboratory and Hutch-Tech High School, in addition to the basketball journeys of other kids in the Buffalo area at the time. If you want to read about the book project, you can go to the page I created on my writer’s blog for the book. There you’ll find a discussion of the project and the numerous print and video materials I’ve generated for the project.

The Engineers: A Western New York Basketball Story Part One is now available for purchase on the Big Words Authors Store in both the hardcover and paperback formats, for $35 and $27, respectively. I’m also running a promotion in this early stage. If you enter the coupon code ‘engineers’ when making your purchase, the price will be discounted. If you want to pay for a copy with one of the other methods (Cash App, PayPal, Venmo or Zelle), you can take $2 off the list prices, but be sure to send me your mailing address at info@bigwordsauthors.com. These editions are also available on Amazon at slightly higher prices. The eBook is also available there for those of you who prefer that format. If you do purchase a copy, please do leave a review on my site, on Amazon or both. Thank you all once again for your support. The QR code and URL for my online store are below.

Finally, I was recently interviewed by Doug Ruffin of the Buffalo History Channel on YouTube about the project. That link is below as well. I’m planning to do a book presentation in Buffalo in the fall. The details are being worked out right now. I will be selling copies of the book there at discounted prices. Look out for announcements for that event here on the Buffalo Criterion and at other sources.
