The Interview of Donald J. Trump By The NABJ (Part 3)
This is the final article in my series on the interview of Donald J. Trump and the surrounding issues as a result. The interview was held on Wednesday, July 31, 2024 in Chicago, Illinois. The journalists featured asked tough and important questions of the former president. It became combative with him insulting the members of the NABJ and not answering all of the questions. Vice President Kamala Harris was not able to attend the conference due to another commitment.
The National Association of Black Journalist (NABJ) is a nonprofit professional organization of Black media members, student journalists, and journalism educators, representing many areas of the country. NABJ’s membership is more than 4,000 strong. According to the group’s website, former presidents George Bush, Barack Obama, and Bill Clinton have attended their conferences in the past. The organization is doing what journalists do. Rachel Scott of ABC News led the interview by asking the former president why should Blacks trust you? Trump responded by saying that, “I don’t think I have been asked such a horrible question before.” He proceeded to insult Rachel Scott throughout the interview. The interview was combative and tense with the former president criticizing the equipment as terrible, saying he could not hear the questions.
Former president Trump continues to insult Vice President Kamala Harris with racial slurs, making fun of her name, never calling her name correctly, saying she is unqualified, not intelligent, and not Black. I am repeating this because African Americans have been called inferior and not intelligent since we were brought to this country. Nothing has changed no matter who you are.
Racism is still alive and well in America. Unfortunately, racism and sexism still plague this country. Donald Trump accused Kamala Harris of just turning Black. It is a ridiculous statement. He is known for making outrageous statements like the one he said last week about having rallies that surpassed Dr. Martin Luther King’s crowd when he said his “I Have a Dream Speech” in Washington, D.C. I guess he forgot about the Million Man March led by Minister Farrakhan, leader of the Nation of Islam.
This Columnist is calling this out because we as Black people need to remember our history and realized that we must vote and set the record straight. History and lies are being told right before our very eyes. I would like to remind my readers to study history. This is the most significant election in our lifetime. I support Vice President Harris for her courage in continuing this campaign despite the insults and lies that she is facing. I would remind her of the speech made by Sojourner Truth in 1851 called “Aint I A Woman.”
Sojourner Truth was an abolitionist and women’s rights advocate who fought slavery and upheld the rights of women. She delivered her speech in 1851 at the Women’s Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio. Her short speech was a personal rebuke to many antifeminist arguments of the day. It became, and continues to serve, as a classic expression of women’s rights. Sojourner Truth became and is still today a symbol of a strong women. You can read her entire speech online. She ends the speech by saying, “Well, if a woman upsets the world, then give her a chance to set it right side up again!!
