A Great Success

On Saturday, February 8, 2025, this columnist hosted the 46th Anniversary Celebration of the Eye On History column at the Frank E. Merriweather Library. The program was well-attended, bringing together community members from all walks of life. Over two hours, attendees reflected on the history and impact of Eye On History, the longest-running column on African American history in Western New York, known for uncovering little-known facts of African American history.

A highlight of the event was the screening of The Real History of Haiti, a film produced and written by this columnist in 1994. The film, which began as an eight-part series in The Criterion from October to November 1994, was directed by videographer and public relations specialist Gregory D. Barber. It was filmed in segments at Mr. Barber’s studio and WUFO.

Beyond the film, the event celebrated outstanding students for their academic excellence and community contributions. As part of the Trophies for Success program, four students were honored:

Harmony Rae Laster (Grade 12, Buffalo Seminary) – A leader in basketball, the film club, Alpha Kappa Sorority Debutante Program, and the DEI team at her school. She is also active in the Buffalo State Step Program and Jack and Jill of America, Inc. Buffalo Chapter.

Christopher Allen Huff (Grade 11, Williamsville East High School) – Recognized for his leadership, involvement in the upcoming Beautillion, musical talent as a tuba player, and his award-winning oratory skills.

Quinton G. Littleton (Grade 9, City Honors School) – Maintains a 98 average and has excelled as a scholar-athlete, winning multiple medals in football and other sports. He is the son of Stacy Littleton and grandson of former Erie County Legislator Betty Jean Grant.

Wan’ye R.F. Rhodes-Carter (Grade 12, Leonardo DaVinci High School) – Holds a 102 average and has received several academic achievement certificates. He is the son of renowned poet Vonetta Rhodes.

Each student was awarded a trophy in recognition of their achievements. City Comptroller Barbara Miller-Williams also honored the students, presenting them with certificates and a $50 bill. Special thanks to Ms. Williams for her generosity and recognition of these young leaders.

Among the notable attendees were School Board members Sharon Belton-Cottman and Paulette Woods, Pastor Dwayne Jones of Mt. Ararat Baptist Church, Bishop Frederick Gelsey, Jim Anderson of The Jim Anderson Radio Show, Mr. and Mrs. Gayles, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, Sister Shirley Muhammad and Sister Diane from Mosque #23. Additional guests included Deacon Gerald Moss, Trustee Tommy Blunt, Grace Tate from First Shiloh Baptist Church, Brent Rollins, Brenda Brown, Sharon Holley, Veronica Golden, Bessie Patterson, and many more community members.

A special thanks to my family members who attended and supported the event. Gregory D. Barber recorded the program, and Frank Merriweather was present to capture photographs of the celebration.

Part two of the 46th Anniversary Celebration is scheduled for Saturday, February 15, 2025, at 1:00 PM at the Frank E. Merriweather Library. For more information, call (716) 847-6010 or visit my Facebook page.
