Election Year 2024: The Fight for the American Promise
By Patrick Freeman
Since 2016 when former President Donald Trump rode down that escalator to proclaim his candidacy for President of the United States of America, this country has slipped into political turmoil, which could result in its implosion from within. You will hear that this election is for democracy and the morality of America. When this election is about much more than aristocracy vs. democracy, this election is about the one thing that separates America from every country in the history of this planet.
The framers of the constitution, who many were people of color, knew that eventually the shortcomings of any nation will come to a head, and they left a unique apparatus in place to help America survive even a bloody civil war. This apparatus is the promise which is uniquely fixed into the constitution of this nation. The promise of America that it has the unique ability to fix its shortcomings which have included enslavement, women’s suffrage, Jim Crow, and other shortcomings.
This unique part of this country’s framework allows us, as we have been victims of greed and selfishness, to rise and demand change. Dr Martin Luther King Jr., from the steps of Lincoln Memorial, proclaimed that America had written a check that returned insufficient funds in their treatment of African people in this country. Malcolm X at the same time skillfully planned to take America before the United Nations and expose how America was not living up to its promise.
So this year more than any other, we are mandated to use our voting power and remind the world of America’s uniqueness, and that is its promise to improve itself at every level and to reject any form of leadership that does not adhere to what keeps this great nation from descending into chaos is its promise to improve and fix the wrongs of this nation both foreign and domestic.
